Following her high school graduation, she went and graduated from the Alabama School of Fine Arts in 1980 with a Theater Arts major. She then completed her Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in theater and telecommunications from Indiana University Bloomington in 1985.

From 2003-2007, Collins wrote five books entitled The Underland Chronicles: Gregor the Overlander, Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane, Gregor and the Curse of the Warmbloods, Gregor and the Marks of Secret, and Gregor and the Code of Claw.

In 2008, she wrote and released The Hunger Games with Scholastic Press. It is the first book of a trilogy by Suzanne. The second book titled Catching Fire was released in September 2009, and the third book Mockingjay was released on 24th August 2010.

1.5 million copies of the first two Hunger Games books were printed in North America alone within 14 months. For more than 60 weeks, the book was on The New York Times Best Seller list.

The trilogy was adapted for film, and the filming began in late spring 2011 with Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, and Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne.

As of March 2012, Collins was named the best-selling Kindle author of all time. On 17th June 2019, she announced that the prequel of the Hunger Games might be released on 19th May 2020, which is based on the failed rebellion 74 years before The Hunger Games trilogy.

The title The Balled of Songbird and Snakes was revealed on 4th October 2019.
