Combined with his growing international appeal and the constrictions on creative expression in the Soviet Union, Baryshnikov defected to Canada in June 1974 and performed briefly for the National Ballet of Canada.

He performed as the principal dancer for four years with the American Ballet Theatre from 1974 to 1978 before committing to the New York City Ballet for fifteen months.

Once his dancing career was winding down, Baryshnikov found work as the artistic director at the American Ballet Theatre and the White Oak Dance Project.
