Michael York, OBE, born as Michael Hugh Johnson, was born on 27 March 1942 to Florence Edith May Chown and Joseph Gwynne Johnson in Fulmer, Buckinghamshire, England. His mother was a musician, and his father was retired military personnel later turned into a businessman. York was raised with an older sister and two younger twin sisters.

York studied in Bromley Grammar School and later went to study at University College in Oxford.

He met his wife Patricia McCallum in 1967 when she was assigned to photograph him. The couple dated for a year before tying the knot on 27th March 1968.
