Leigh Whannell: Net Worth & Salary Breakdown

Whannell started his on-screen career as a minor character in TV shows like Neighbours and Blue Heelers. He also had a minor role in the 2003 sci-fi action movie, The Matrix Reloaded.

Realizing that there was a life beyond acting, Whannell turned to what he knew best: writing. He had started writing while still a child and together with his friend James Wan, they wrote what would be Saw.

Their vision was first realized in a short-film format in 2003, and when a full-length feature film was released in 2004 with Wan stepping in as the director, a horror phenomenon had begun.

Besides writing the screenplay, Whannell also starred in the movie as Adam Stanheight.

The low-budget movie became a sleeper-hit and spawned a multi-part franchise. Whannell also wrote for the next two sequels, Saw II and Saw III, stepping in as the executive producer.

The Wan-Whannell collaboration saw the making of another horror favorite: 2010’s Insidious. Starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, the movie was once again directed by Wan with Whannell drafting the screenplay as well as having a prominent role.

Whannell made his directorial debut in the third installment in the Insidious franchise, 2015’s Insidious III. He has since directed two more movies: 2018’s Upgrade and 2020’s The Invisible Man — starring Elisabeth Moss.
