Kelly McGillis came out as gay in April 2009 during an interview with SheWired.

Following her announcement, she got into a “civil union” with Melanie Leis — a sales executive McGillis had known when Leis was a bartender at McGillis and her then-husband, Fred Tillman’s Florida bar, Kelly’s Caribbean Bar Grill & Brewery.

They had been dating for nearly a decade before getting into a “civil union” in 2010, but they broke up in 2011.

Sexual Assaults

McGillis moved to New York City in 1979 to study acting at Juilliard School. She was renting an apartment with a roommate when, in 1982, the apartment was broken into and two armed assailants sexually and physically assaulted her along with her roommate.

They took turns violating her and stabbed her several times. The police arrived in the nick of time, saving McGillis, who faced certain death.

She spent years rehabbing her past trauma and the consequent substance abuse issues when she was again assaulted in June 2016 as a woman forced herself into her North Carolina home.

McGillis also revealed that she had been sexually assaulted by three men when she was 12.
