Hong is the son of Frank W. Hong and Lee Shui Fa. He completed his early education in Hong Kong before coming back to the United States at age ten. He later went on to study at Minneapolis Central High School.
Upon graduation, James got enrolled at the University of Minnesota to study civil engineering. He spent seven years working as a road engineer in Los Angeles Country and later also served in the United States Army.
Hong later started focusing on show-business and is now credited for over 500 TV and film roles.
