The Personal Life Of George Harrison
Harrison was born on February 25, 1943, in Wavertree, Liverpool to parents Harold and Louise Harrison. He was the youngest of 4 children; Louise, Harold, and Peter. He lived at 12 Arnold’s Grove during the first four years of his life until moving to a council house in 1949.
He joined Liverpool Institute High School for Boys but was highly disappointed at the lack of guitars in school and felt the school “molded students into being frightened”.
George was also a fan of cars and racing in general. He was one of the first 100 people to buy the McLaren F!, the fastest production car of its time.
Religion
After his admiration of Indian music and culture and traveling to India with the Beatles members, George’s curiosity grew even deeper. While in India, he met many Yogis and Gurus and him and his band’s experiment with psychedelic drugs pushed him to convert to Hinduism. He stated,
“For me, it was like a flash. The first time I had acid, it just opened up something in my head that was inside of me, and I realized a lot of things. I didn’t learn them because I already knew them, but that happened to be the key that opened the door to reveal them. From the moment I had that, I wanted to have it all the time – these thoughts about the yogis and the Himalayas, and Ravi’s music.”
Common in Hindu tradition, George then turned vegetarian in the late 60s and participated in the Hare Krishna movement.

He recorded “Hare Krishna Mantra” in London along with members of the Krishna temple. He believed that every religion is part of the same branch and stated,
Krishna actually was in a body as a person … What makes it complicated is, if he’s God, what’s he doing fighting on a battlefield? It took me ages to try to figure that out, and again it was Yogananda’s spiritual interpretation of the Bhagavad Gita that made me realise what it was. Our idea of Krishna and Arjuna on the battlefield in the chariot. So this is the point – that we’re in these bodies, which is like a kind of chariot, and we’re going through this incarnation, this life, which is kind of a battlefield.
He further added:
The senses of the body … are the horses pulling the chariot, and we have to get control over the chariot by getting control over the reins. And Arjuna in the end says, “Please Krishna, you drive the chariot” because unless we bring Christ or Krishna or Buddha or whichever of our spiritual guides … we’re going to crash our chariot, and we’re going to turn over, and we’re going to get killed in the battlefield. That’s why we say “Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna“, asking Krishna to come and take over the chariot.
He was largely responsible for connecting Hinduism with the Psychedelic movement in the 60s.
Relationships
George was in a long time 11-year marriage with Pattie Boyd but growing insecurities caused the couple to go distant. The couple ended their relationship in 1977, Pattie Boyd then married Eric Clapton, George’s close friend.

Harrison married Dark Horse Records‘ secretary Olivia Arias in 1978. The two have a son, Dhani Harrison born on August 1, 1978.
Death
After being diagnosed with Lung cancer in around 2001, he died sometime later in November 2001 at a friend’s house in Los Angeles. He was cremated at Hollywood Forever Cemetary and his ashes were scattered in Yamuna and Ganges, rivers in Varanasi, India by his wife and family as per Hindu tradition. His cause of death was cancer.
