Dave Attell’s prodigious wealth comes from his prolific career as a comedian, writer, and actor. He has been performing in some form or fashion since the late ’80s and is widely considered one of the best — if not the best — off-color comedian alive.

Attell began his career as a stand-up comedian and performed at open-mic gigs. One such gig landed him his first TV role in the VH1 1998 stand-up docuseries, Stand-Up Spotlight, hosted by Rosie O’Donnell.

He went on to appear in many televised comedy specials throughout the next couple of years before landing his biggest gig in the November 24, 1993 episode of The David Letterman Show.

His performance was so well-loved that Saturday Night Show creator Lorne Michaels recruited him to write for the show. He went on to write and occasionally perform on the show for a year from 1993 to 1994.

In 1995, Attell landed a gig working for late-night legend Jon Stewart on his show, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where he worked as a commentator on “The Ugly American” segment for three years.

The pinnacle of his television career was Insomniac with Dave Attell show on Comedy Central. The show ran from August 5, 2001, until November 11, 2004, and featured Attell wandering popular American cities late at night and having drug-infused conversations with random people.

He also hosted Comedy Underground with Dave Attell on Comedy Central from April 2014 — a late-night stand-up comedy show featuring comedians like Jeff Ross, Amy Schumer, Ali Wong, and Nikki Glaser, among others.

David Attell was born on January 18, 1965, in Queens, New York. The 57-year-old stands at 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 meters).

He was born in a Jewish household and raised in Rockville Centre, Nassau County, New York, where he attended South Side High School.

After his graduation, he enrolled at New York University and pursued a degree in communication. He graduated with a Bachelor in Arts degree in 1987.

He started performing on open-mic nights in comedy clubs straight out of university.

Attell’s sister, Monica Attell is a musician most known for her work with the band, Zeta Bane.
