He began his career as an actor and comedian following his graduation. In 1979, he became the host of the New York City comedy club Catch a Rising Star.
In 1982, he began appearing in Johnny Carson’s and David Letterman’s shows. Some of his early acting credits are Sara, Mas Headroom, Murder, She Wrote, Charlie Hoover, and several others.

William Maher was born on 20th January 1956 in New York City, New York, the United States of America to Julie Maher and William Aloysius Maher Jr. He holds an American nationality and has mixed ethnic ancestry.
He was raised in River Vale, New Jersey and went to Pascack Hills High School and graduated in 1974. He then enrolled at Cornell University from where he majored in English and history and graduated in 1978.

Maher never married; however, he has been in several romantic relationships. He began dating former Playboy Cyber Girl Coco Johnson in 2003 until November 2004.
Following their breakup after 17 months, Johnsen filed a lawsuit for $9 million for pain and suffering for alleged “insulting, humiliating and degrading racial comments”.
In response, Maher’s lawyer filed a case on 23rd November 2004 in Los Angeles Superior Court and said that Bill is a “confirmed bachelor and a very public one at that” and “never promised to marry her or to have children with her”. The lawsuit was dismissed on 2nd May 2005.
