BD Wong was born on 24th October 1960, in San Francisco, California. He is the son of Roberta Christine Wong, a telephone company supervisor and William D. Wong, a postal worker.
He grew up in his hometown San Francisco along with his older brother and younger brother. He did his schooling from Lincoln High School. Meanwhile, Wong also developed a strong passion for acting and also performed in a number of school plays.
Wong later graduated from San Francisco State University.

BD Wong is openly gay who was previously in a long-term relationship with talent agent Richie Jackson in 1988. They also had two sons Boaz Dov and Jackson Foo Wong, born in 2000 through a surrogate mother. Sadly, their son Boaz died 90 minutes after birth.
