In an Instagram post following the donation, he wrote:
“Even in ordinary times, food insecurity in American households is an important problem, and unfortunately COVID-19 is amplifying that stress significantly.
Non-profit food banks and food pantries rely in large part on surplus food from a range of food businesses. For example, many restaurants donate excess food.
He also further added
“Today, I want to support those on the front lines at our nation’s food banks and those who are relying on them for food with a $100 million gift to @FeedingAmerica. Feeding America will quickly distribute the funds to their national network of food banks and food pantries, getting food to those countless families who need it.”
According to Forbes, Feeding America is the second-largest charity in America in terms of revenue generated with over $2.9 billion in non-revenue generated in 2019. It also has over 200 food banks all over America.
Bezos also pledged $10 billion to fight climate change in February 2020. Similarly, a year before, in 2018, he also launched a $2 billion fund to help open pre-schools ion low-income neighbourhoods.
Similarly, the $100 million is Bezos’ second donation to fight the Coronavirus pandemic as he donated to a coalition titled All in Seattle, which raised over $27 million, but the amount that Jeff Bezos gave has not been revealed.
Amazon also donated $25 million to the fund to help employees and workers battle the pandemic. However, the founder has been criticized for not providing PPE to Amazon workers.
In fact, he workers from around the Amazon warehouses have protested the company’s decision to stay open, risking workers’ health. Workers are also reporting a shortage in hand sanitizers and wipes, also adding that they are not provided with masks or gloves.
All this comes while many billionaires, including Bezos, are suffering huge losses in wealth due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
